As you probably know, I recently went back on the Carb Nite Solution diet following a Thanksgiving/pre-holiday junk food binge. In yesterday’s post, I revealed that I lost 6 pounds in 24 hours and now I just lost another 3.
If you’re counting, that means I’ve lost 9 pounds in 48 hours.
Now as I said yesterday, I want to explain the dramatic weight loss.
If you’re familiar with low carb diets, then you know this type of weight loss is nothing special and is very typical for people who are obese, like me. The explanation for a lot of this weight loss is that a lot of it is water weight. Here, let me explain a little bit…

This is all overly simplified, but your body has two primary fuel sources: glucose and ketones. Glucose basically comes from carbohydrates (breads, potatoes, sweets, etc…) and is stored mostly in your muscle tissue. Ketones are produced from the breakdown of fat tissue.
Your body can only use one energy source at a time so while your body has a supply of glucose, your fat tissue becomes a storage of energy – that’s really all fat is.
This means while your body uses glucose for energy, your muscle tissue stores glycogen (think of it as a stored version of glucose), essential glycogen transport enzymes, and WATER.
Because I haven’t given my body any carbohydrates for the past two days, my muscle glucose (it’s actually called glycogen at this point) is mostly depleted and along with it all the water it was holding.
Now, this doesn’t mean that my 9 pound weight loss is all water. There are ways you can test your ketone production, which will confirm that you are in fact losing fat and I constantly test for ketones. But, if you’re looking to drop the weight fast, going low carb is the best way to do it.
